Safety
All archers are expected to abide by the common sense safety rules as laid out here. Some safety rules are:
Before Shooting
- Wear proper safety gear, including an arm guard and finger tab or glove.
- Tie back long hair, remove loose jewelry, and avoid baggy clothing.
- Follow all range commands from your supervising adult.
- Never dry fire a bow (shooting without an arrow).
While Shooting
- Only nock an arrow when there is nobody down range and when pointing toward the target.
- Always point the bow downrange at a target – never towards people or animals, even as a joke.
- Shoot only when it’s safe and it’s your turn.
- Keep arrows in your quiver until it’s time to shoot.
- Stand behind the shooting line when not shooting.
- Never cross the shooting line if anyone else might be shooting.
Retrieving Arrows
- Wait for the all-clear before retrieving arrows.
- Walk slowly—don’t run—to the target.
- Retrieve arrows carefully.
- Check for damaged arrows after retrieving; do not shoot damaged arrows.
General Shooting Etiquette
- Archery is a quiet sport.
- Respect other archers’ space and concentration.
- Report unsafe behavior immediately.
